Position Overview

As a Forensic Science Administrator II within the Division of Forensic Services, under direction, maintains documentation of the administration of the system; serves as the statewide liaison within the department and with other criminal justice agencies. Serves as full line supervisor; assigns and reviews work; provides guidance and training to assigned staff; counsels staff regarding work performance. Evaluates, reviews, modifies, and selects the final specifications for the Command in regard to instrument parameters and compatibility with existing forensic specialty requirements and methods of analysis. Directs the efforts of Forensic Science Administrators and other Forensic Science personnel in analyzing the various forensic specialties and methods of analysis to determine the most appropriate system for capturing data indicating the time of analysis and the degree of difficulty of various tests performed per case. Serves as the Command's contact for the state laboratory commodity contracts between the state laboratories and Central Management Services. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Essential Functions

  • Administers the statewide forensic and evidence information management system.
  • Serves as full line supervisor.
  • Has technical supervision, and monitors/reviews the work activity of forensic scientists involved in technical programs such as Laboratory Information Mangement System and developing forensic scientific instrument specifications.
  • Manages the technical specifications process of leasing and purchasing forensic scientific instruments.
  • Administers the Command's management information system for the Commander's office.
  • Establishes analytical maintenance contracts.
  • Negotiates complex instrument contracts for the Forensic Sciences Command.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a natural or forensic science, preferably supplemented by a master's degree in one of the biological, natural, physical, or forensic sciences or related discipline.
  • Requires three (3) years of professional forensic science work experience such as would be gained at the advanced caseworker level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers five (5) years of work experience with laboratory information management systems.
  • Prefers five (5) years of work experience that would be gained at the advanced caseworker level performing laboratory techniques and using analytical methods in at least one of the forensic science discipline areas.
  • Prefers three (3) years of work experience in maintaining the chain of custody of physical evidence.
  • Prefers three (3) years of work experience applying State, Federal, and local criminal laws and regulations as they relate to the forensic examination and chain-of-custody of forensic evidence.
  • Prefers two (2) years of work experience triaging forensic evidence submission and casework approach accounting for the various forensic science laboratory services provided and the different disciplines’ examination techniques.
  • Prefers one (1) year of work experience in developing, implementing, and enforcing policies, procedures and quality standards for a forensic science laboratory.
  • Prefers one (1) year of work experience in compiling and preparing administrative reports and records.
  • Prefers one (1) year of work experience supervising subordinate staff and providing for their professional development.
  • Prefers one (1) year of work experience in developing a laboratory budget for resources to include personnel and equipment needs to assist in the preparation and implementation of the laboratory budget.

  • Ability to maintain credibility in providing courtroom testimony.

  • Ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
